About Me

Contact Me

I was born in the United Kingdom and came to the United States in 1974 where I’ve lived (apart from eight years in Switzerland and France from 1990-1998). I’ve lived in New York City (Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) for brief periods and for a longer period on Long Island. Most recently I’ve been living in the lower Hudson Valley.

Until recently I’d have said that my interest in photography came from a gift from my wife in the mid 1970s: a Minolta Hi-Matic 7sii. However, not too long ago I discovered an old photograph of my father that reminded me that I had had a camera when I was a kid. It was a Kodak Brownie Vecta. I had forgotten all about it until I came across the photograph. May love of old rangefinder film cameras certainly comes from the Minolta though.

I’m interested in history and I like to take pictures of old places, things etc. – especially those, which in the future may disappear. I’m a big fan of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans. and particularly  Eugene Atget.  At the moment I largely shoot with a Sony A7IV and a variety of Sony E mount lenses as well as legacy lenses with appropriate adaptors.  On occasion I shoot with older manual film cameras (Rangefinders, SLRs and point and shoots).

The site is divided into nine sections:

Home
Stories: Pictures and text. Stories of explorations of the Hudson Valley and beyond; Thoughts on photographs, photography and photographers.
Portfolios: Some of my favorite photographs organized by genre: landscape, street, macro, abstracts, black and white, infrared, ruins, cemeteries, wildlife-animals, roses etc.
Single Images. For those images that don’t easily fit into the other sections.
Projects: Long term projects, the first of which attempts to document the towns along the Hudson River. More to come.
Cameras: I’ve been collecting cameras since around 2011. This section presents some of these cameras.
Photobooks: Some recently acquired photobooks by and about well-known photographers. And some old favorites.
Visits & Events: Collections of photographs from places I’ve visited and events I’ve attended, and which, for one reason or another I haven’t yet turned into Stories.
About: More information about me including how to contact me. This is the page you’re looking at now.
